about

Zabibu is a Zanzibari song about forbidden love, in which the listener‘s heart is warned against stealing someone else's love – an idea we believe most people adhere to, whatever their cultural background. One possible translation of the word ‘zabibu’ is ‘grapes’, thus the title could be interpreted as suggesting that even though there are a lot of wonderfully juicy ‘grapes’ available, you cannot (or shouldn’t!) taste them all… Apart from being a great tune, Zabibu it is special in the sense that it is the very tune which gave us the idea of producing this album, when we first played it with Zanzibari musicians on a fantastic beach in Tanzania.

Hicaz Mandira is a tune which has its origins in the huge Ottoman Empire and it was actually composed by the Sultan Abdulaziz (1830-1876). Today it is considered an example of classical music from that era, and its melody and the lively 7/8-measure makes it a vital and interesting tune even today. The Hicaz Doulab could be considered an introduction to the Mandira – as it sets a common mood with the use of the same scale.

Most of the tunes on this album are based on the traditional Arab concept of the melody as being either supported by a drone (one deep note) or simply played in unison with several musicians playing the same melody. However, we’ve also added some harmonic changes inspired by our own musical tradition in a few places, for example in the cover-songs of Anouar Brahem’s “Astrakan Café” and “Perfum de Gitane”. We are still loving the original versions of these songs by this famous Tunisian oud player and composer, but when given a chance to be master-chefs, we could not resist our desire to add some of our own flavours to the dish!
